Heinen Freezing, a manufacturer of industrial cooling and freezing systems, uses planetary gear units from SEW-EURODRIVE in its equipment. Varel-based Heinen Freezing has been a partner to the national and international food industry for over 30 years with its industrial pasteurizing, cooking, cooling and freezing systems. The company supplies high-quality standard models and customized solutions throughout the world, from individual and series-produced machines to complex combination lines.

The arctic a10 spiral freezer is a flexible system for cooling and freezing foodstuffs such as baked goods, meat products, fish and pizza. The entire series is available in various widths and spacings, numerous layout versions and options for medium to large capacities. The torque required is produced by a P series planetary gear unit from SEW-EURODRIVE.

This product group comprises eleven sizes covering the torque range from 25 to 630 kNm and is used where heavy masses need to be moved at low speed.

The planetary gear units in the spiral freezer are equipped with a reinforced bearing and their output shaft is fixed to the frame of the conveyor system, so that the gear units also act as locating bearings and can support the entire load. A shared oil chamber for the planetary gear units and helical-bevel gear unit of the preliminary stage has also been integrated.

This allows the food-grade oil to be changed quickly and cleanly in line with food industry regulations.

SEW-EURODRIVE tailors its planetary gear units to the food industry’s needs by applying resistant coatings that do not flake off. The wide temperature range that the units are exposed to presents a particular challenge in this application. It extends from -35°C during operation to +30°C during cleaning of the spiral freezer.

SEW-EURODRIVE has completely re-designed the XP large planetary gear unit series.

These gear units with a torque range of 600 to 5,200 kNm are now based on a modular system. This leads to a harmonious size graduation with ratios of 20 to over 1,000.

Various options are available for the input end, including a motor adapter or a free input shaft linked to a cardan shaft. For the output end, standardized output shafts are available as hollow shafts with shrink disks, solid shafts with keys or as square shafts. Installation is possible as a foot- or flange-mounted design or with a torque arm.

The concept includes two-, three- and four-stage models that can also be extended using helical and helical-bevel units from the successful X series. DRN energy-efficient motors from SEW-EURODRIVE can help cut energy costs. What’s more, efficient use of endoscopy systems for gear unit diagnostics is factored into the design. This increases both machine availability and process reliability.

X series agitator drives from SEW-EURODRIVE are ideal for use wherever a high level of performance is required for stirring and mixing large quantities of liquid or paste-type substances. In addition to the torque that has to be transferred, high radial or axial forces are often brought to bear on the output shaft, and SEW therefore delivers load-specific solutions. For a standardized solution in the torque range of 22 to 90 kNm, there is a model with a universal housing for 2-, 3- and 4-stage helical and helical-bevel gear units in two basic variants.

Both are scalable in terms of capacity for external loads. This is thanks to increased bearing distance as well as, for one of the variants, reinforced bearings coupled with a reinforced output shaft. Customers also benefit from a gear unit housing designed specifically for the three-stage vertical helical gear units often used in this application. This increases the thermal rating through the use of cooling fins and also reduces unwanted contours when using pressure lubrication. All drives can be used in combination with the standard options drywell sealing, pressure lubrication / oil bath lubrication, flange coupling, foot- or flange-mounting, and fan cooling.

Online Support is the new way of accessing all the SEW-EURODRIVE services available online and completely replaces the DriveGate customer portal in Germany. It has been fully integrated into the new website so that customers can now stay within one system and do not have to leave the site.

Many functions are now freely accessible, with login only necessary for functions involving sensitive or customer-specific data. The logical structure is based on process stages so as to take customers straight to the sections they need. Several functions have been completely re-designed, containing useful help buttons and guiding the user quickly to the desired result. Overview of the new functions:

Böhnke & Luckau machines are used in many countries all over the world – from Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Eastern Europe to the Middle East and Asia. Their good reputation is based on a high level of demand for the products among customers. The company from Wernigerode in Germany specializes in molding lines that are used to manufacture specialties – chocolate creations in all shapes and sizes. Chocolate is a food and indulgence that is good for the health and makes us happy.

Böhnke & Luckau GmbH from Wernigerode develops and constructs machinery and complete systems for the chocolate industry, and supplies these to customers worldwide. XXL is the designation used for its high-capacity block line. It is perfect for injecting chocolate into large molds of up to 5,000 g and can process up to 2,500 kg per hour, mixing, tempering, dosing, venting and cooling the chocolate. Drives from SEW-EURODRIVE lend a helping hand. The chocolate is injected into the mold via a distribution plate with milled cavities. A CMSB.. electric cylinder uses a crank to operate a shaft, to which a comb-shaped piston base is attached. The individual pistons are fixed to this and travel laterally into the injector head. They move in from the side, pressing the chocolate mass through a distributor plate with channels. These channels collect the chocolate mass and distribute it evenly among the nozzles, which are screwed onto a nozzle plate. The motion of the pistons causes the chocolate to be injected into the mold.

“Because of the space restrictions of our machine, we value the compact size of the SEW electric cylinders and the large forces they can produce. The displacement curve of these cylinders is such that the chocolate is evenly distributed and homogeneously formed,” says an appreciative Ronny Krebs, Director of Purchasing at Böhnke & Luckau. “This is a significant advantage over pneumatic or hydraulic drives,” adds Volker Schulz. He heads the Magdeburg Technical Office for SEW‑EURODRIVE and has worked with Böhnke & Luckau for over 20 years. During this time, he has helped the customer realize a great number of innovations, as it regularly employs SEW drives in its machines. SEW-EURODRIVE not only meets the verified requirements profile, but also offers development services to provide tailored custom solutions. CMSB.. electric cylinders are equipped with permanent magnet rotors. These integrated servomotors are extremely precise and powerful. When combined with drive electronics – the MOVIDRIVE drive inverter from SEW-EURODRIVE for this application – they constitute a cost-efficient solution that ensures high process reliability for the system.

The new EDRE250, EDRE280 and EDRE315 motors have added a total of seven sizes to the product portfolio of SEW motors for use in potentially explosive areas. As will also be the case for the brake motors in future, these motors meet the requirements of EU Directive 94/9/EC (ATEX) and its successor, Directive 2014/34/EU, and are available as category 3 equipment. They comply with efficiency class IE2 and can therefore also be used in non-European markets with efficiency regulations that accept motors adhering to the ATEX directive. The four EDRE315 motor sizes provide higher power ratings to augment the existing product portfolio of motors and gearmotors for use in potentially explosive areas, while the three EDRE250/280 sizes replace the DVE250/280 series in category 3. Motors EDRE250 to 315 are available in gas and/or dust explosion protection designs as /3GD or /3D and augment the modular system of EDRS71 to EDRE225 motors that have been successfully established on the market for many years. The entire EDR.. series is available both in gearmotor form and as stand-alone motors in a foot-mounted and/or flange-mounted design.

SEW-EURODRIVE Finland supplied a comprehensive refurbishment package for the systems at the Imatra hydropower plant. The waterfalls in the southern Finnish town of the same name have been used to generate electricity since 1929. Following the refurbishment, R107DRE180 helical gearmotors and MOVITRAC® MC07B frequency inverters move the heavy intake gates to close off and bank up the water. This has cut the time it takes to raise and lower the gates. M1..N industrial gear units from SEW-EURODRIVE also play a role in this by increasing the gate lowering speed.

These units were developed specifically for applications with a relatively small gear ratio range. Typical applications include process engineering pumps, roller drives and refiners in the paper industry. The larger housing surface and the special lubrication design are ideal for high drive powers. The gear units can be equipped with special surface and corrosion protection if necessary, which means they can also be used in extremely damp and/or chemically aggressive environments.
